Migrate an EF Core Cosmos app after the generated id escaping change in EF Core 11

EF Core 11 stops escaping '/', '\', '?' and '#' in generated Cosmos DB id values, so documents written by EF Core 8-10 stop resolving by key. How to find out if you are affected, when to set the EscapeIllegalCosmosIdCharacters switch, and how to rewrite the ids safely with a transactional batch.

Microsoft.Data.SqlClient vs System.Data.SqlClient in .NET 11

Use Microsoft.Data.SqlClient. System.Data.SqlClient is deprecated, already emits CS0618 on every type you touch, and loses its .NET assets when .NET 8 goes end of support on November 10, 2026, the same day .NET 11 ships. The measured feature gap, the Encrypt default that breaks the migration, and the 7.0 package split.

Process.Run vs Process.Start in .NET 11: which should you use?

Use Process.Run when you start a tool and only care how it exited: one call, a timeout that kills the child, and a ProcessExitStatus with the signal. Keep Process.Start when you need the Process object: writing to stdin, reading output as it arrives, UseShellExecute, or killing a whole process tree.

The .NET 11 JIT Devirtualizes Generic Virtual Methods, and the Allocation Goes With Them

Stephen Toub's Performance Improvements in .NET 11 post shows generic virtual method calls dropping from 6.7 ns and 24 bytes to 1.8 ns and zero allocation. Three RyuJIT pull requests unlocked inlining on the dispatch that used to be the most opaque one in .NET.

SQL Server compatibility level 150 vs 160: what changes for EF Core 11 queries

EF Core 11 now defaults UseSqlServer to compatibility level 160, which puts LEAST, GREATEST and two-argument LTRIM/RTRIM into your SQL, including every Take(n).FirstOrDefault(). Keep 160 on SQL Server 2022 and later; pin UseCompatibilityLevel(150) if any environment still runs SQL Server 2019.

Fix: Could not load file or assembly 'Microsoft.Data.SqlClient, Version=7.0.0.0' after updating EF Core

EF Core 11 is compiled against Microsoft.Data.SqlClient 7.0.0.0, but a 6.x copy won the restore or the deploy. Remove the old SqlClient pin and redeploy the full output.

How to Create and Extract ZIP Files Asynchronously with the ZipArchive Async APIs in .NET 11

Use ZipFile.CreateFromDirectoryAsync, ExtractToDirectoryAsync, ZipArchive.CreateAsync and ZipArchiveEntry.OpenAsync without hidden synchronous I/O. Measured on .NET 11 RC 1 and .NET 10.0.12, including the .NET 10 bug that still blocks Kestrel.

How to bind a complex query-string object with [AsParameters] in a minimal API in ASP.NET Core 11

Put [AsParameters] on a class or record to bind a whole query-string filter in an ASP.NET Core 11 minimal API. Covers defaults, arrays, enums, nested objects, validation, OpenAPI, and a Native AOT generator bug with positional records.

How to enable R8 shrinking and obfuscation for a .NET MAUI Android release build

Set AndroidLinkTool to r8, keep trimming on, and add a ProguardConfiguration file. Why .NET 10 and .NET 11 RC 1 still ship un-obfuscated Java, how the new AndroidR8ObfuscationMode property changes that, and how to verify R8 actually ran.

How to intercept the Android back button on a .NET MAUI Shell root page

Override OnBackButtonPressed on the root page and run .NET MAUI 10.0.101 or later. Why root pages stopped receiving back presses from 10.0.70 (Android 16) and 10.0.100 (every Android version), why .NET 11 RC 1 is still affected, why Shell.OnNavigating and BackButtonBehavior.Command do not help, and a MainActivity workaround for the broken versions.
