.NET 9: The End of lock(object)

.NET 9 introduces System.Threading.Lock, a dedicated lightweight synchronization primitive that replaces lock(object) with better performance and clearer intent.

For nearly two decades, C# developers have relied on a simple pattern for thread synchronization: creating a private object instance and passing it to the lock statement. While effective, this approach carries hidden performance costs that .NET 9 finally eliminates with the introduction of System.Threading.Lock.

The Hidden Cost of Monitor

When you write lock (myObj), the compiler translates it into calls to System.Threading.Monitor.Enter and Monitor.Exit. This mechanism relies on the object header word—a piece of metadata attached to every reference type on the managed heap.

Using a standard object for locking forces the runtime to:

  1. Allocate a heap object solely for identity.
  2. Inflate the object header to accommodate synchronization information (the “sync block”) upon contention.
  3. Add pressure to the Garbage Collector (GC), even if the object never escapes the class.

In high-throughput scenarios, these micro-allocations and header manipulations add up.

Enter System.Threading.Lock

.NET 9 introduces a dedicated type: System.Threading.Lock. This is not just a wrapper around Monitor; it is a lightweight synchronization primitive designed specifically for mutual exclusion.

When the C# 13 compiler encounters a lock statement targeting a System.Threading.Lock instance, it generates different code. Instead of Monitor.Enter, it calls Lock.EnterScope(), which returns a Lock.Scope struct. This struct implements IDisposable to release the lock, ensuring thread safety even if exceptions occur.

Before vs. After

Here is the traditional approach we are leaving behind:

  2. Performance: System.Threading.Lock avoids the overhead of the object header sync block. It uses a more efficient internal implementation that reduces CPU cycles during lock acquisition and release.
  3. Future Proofing: Using the dedicated type allows the runtime to optimize locking mechanics further without breaking legacy Monitor behavior.

Best Practices

This feature requires both .NET 9 and C# 13. If you are upgrading an existing project, you can mechanically replace private readonly object _lock = new(); with private readonly Lock _lock = new();. The compiler handles the rest.

Do not expose the Lock instance publicly. Just like the old object pattern, encapsulation is key to preventing deadlocks caused by external code locking on your internal synchronization primitives.

For developers building high-concurrency systems, this small change represents a significant step forward in reducing runtime overhead.
